The English company Airfix produced five extremely high quality 54mm sets of NATO infantry soldiers in the early 1980s. No markings identify Airfix on their bases. They were sold in hobby shops rather than toy stores. They came in variety of boxes and small bags. The fives sets are US infantry, British infantry, German Infantry, British S.A.S., and Russian Infantry. I count some of these guys among the best unpainted toy soldiers of all time.
I believe that the US infantry figures are the first toy soldiers made after the US Army changed its helmet design.
